The relevance of Indian knowledge systems in modern education
Author(s): Sunita Acharya
Abstract: The Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) are a rich and varied heritage of thought that includes modern scientific discoveries, creative forms, holistic pedagogical approaches, and age-old philosophical frameworks. There is a rising tide of support for including IKS in modern curriculum as a result of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and other global education changes in India. This integration aims to decolonize education while also equipping students with culturally grounded information that promotes holistic development, sustainability, ethical reasoning, and critical thinking. With an emphasis on fields including classical music, traditional ecological knowledge, Vedic mathematics, Ayurveda, and Indian logic (Nyaya), this study investigates the theoretical and practical significance of integrating IKS into contemporary educational systems. Additionally, it emphasizes the global repercussions, difficulties in implementation, and pedagogical benefits of this curriculum change. More inclusive, integrative, and intellectually rewarding education may be achieved in India by bringing together traditional knowledge with modern demands.
