Digital transformation of spirituality: Mahakumbh 2025 and cultural renaissance

Author(s): Amit Bhardwaj

Abstract: The Kumbh Mela 2025, held in Prayagraj from January 13 to February 26, was a vibrant symbol of Indian culture, spirituality, and unity. It is the world’s largest religious gathering, occurring every 12 years at the four locations of Prayagraj, Haridwar, Ujjain and Nashik. The Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj is globally renowned for its grandeur and magnitude, where the confluence of the Sun, Moon, and Jupiter in specific astrological positions is believed to wash away sins and lead to salvation through the sacred bathing at the confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna, and Sarasvati rivers. Ancient texts, including the Puranas, describe the mythological stories of the churning of the ocean and the nectar-filled Kumbh, highlighting the festival’s ancient roots. Rivers hold a paramount place in Indian culture, and the Kumbh is associated with four significant rivers: Ganga, Shipra, Godavari, and the Sangam. This event is a spiritual, cultural and social hub of unity for Hindus. The Kumbh Mela 2025 took on a "Digital Kumbh" form by incorporating modern technologies such as AI, drones, CCTV and the Kumbh Mela App. These innovations ensured crowd management, safety and convenience for the pilgrims. UPI-based payments, QR code navigation and online booking made travel easier. Under the leadership of the Uttar Pradesh government and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, cleanliness, healthcare services and digital management made this event unprecedented. Kumbh Mela 2025 strengthened India’s cultural and technological image worldwide through the integration of tradition and technology.
