A study of mental health literacy for building resilience and coping skill to remove troublence and mental illness of generation Z

Author(s): Md. Jiaur Rahaman

Abstract: The study assesses the connections between self-esteem, coping strategies, trait anxiety, and mental health literacy among the members of the Indian Generation Z. The aim of the research is to find out how different coping mechanisms influence the outcomes on anxiety and resilience, considering that the number of those reporting psychological distress within this age bracket has increased, especially after the COVID-19 outbreak. In a cross-sectional study, 199 quantitative studies done with Indians aged 18-27 were involved. The continuous assessment of trait anxiety, self-esteem, and three individual coping strategies—problem-focused, emotion-focused, and avoidant coping—was carried out with the help of standardized measures. An analysis of correlations and differences in the genders and educational level was conducted by using statistical techniques: correlations, the difference between genders and levels of education, multiple regression, ANOVA analysis, Pearson correlation, t-analysis, and descriptive analysis. The outcome indicated that despite the adverse relationship between higher trait anxiety and problem-focused coping and self-esteem, there is a positive relationship between higher trait anxiety and the avoidant and emotion-focused coping. A statistically significant difference was also found across the sexes, with men expressing greater self-esteem, whereas women expressed greater worry. Besides, self-esteem and educational success had a positive correlation. Coping mechanisms play an important part in mental health, which regression analysis demonstrates because it revealed coping mechanisms explain 29.4 percent of the variation of trait anxiety. Conducting research on just Generation Z, which experiences specific socio-digital stress, the research helps to eliminate a huge gap in the literature on the topic in India. It emphasizes the allocation of gender-sensitive practices and insists on implementing mental health literacy early at schools and universities. These findings present valuable data that can be accessed by policymakers and mental health experts and teachers and can be utilized to develop special resilience programs that would assist young adults in emotional well-being and adaptive functioning in India.
