A systematic study of the 'Three-fold vision' framework in addressing urbanization challenges in India: A case study of Delhi
Author(s): Satish Kumar and Kajol
Abstract: This study examines the urbanization challenges faced by Delhi, India, and explores the effectiveness of the 'Three-Fold Vision' framework—sustainability, inclusivity, and resilience—in addressing these issues. Rapid urbanization in Delhi has led to overcrowding, environmental degradation, socio-economic inequalities, and inadequate infrastructure. Despite several policy initiatives, including the Delhi Master Plan and Smart Cities Mission, these challenges persist, highlighting the need for a more integrated and holistic approach to urban planning. The research adopts a mixed-methods design, combining qualitative interviews with key stakeholders and a survey of residents, along with secondary data from urban planning documents. The findings reveal that while sustainability, inclusivity, and resilience are acknowledged within urban policies, the implementation of these principles is often hindered by political, financial, and logistical challenges. The study concludes that while the 'Three-Fold Vision' framework provides a comprehensive approach to urban development, its successful application in Delhi requires enhanced governance, better coordination across stakeholders, and stronger community engagement. Recommendations are made for improving affordable housing, sustainable transportation, environmental policies, and urban resilience to ensure a more equitable and sustainable future for Delhi's growing population.
