Role of Indian languages in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020: A step towards inclusive and culturally rooted education
Author(s): Sabaj Kumar
Abstract: The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 marks a landmark reform in India’s educational landscape by giving due recognition to the linguistic diversity of the nation. It emphasizes the use of Indian languages, particularly mother tongues and regional languages, as mediums of instruction, especially during the foundational years of learning. This research article critically examines the significance, implications, and challenges of this policy shift, highlighting how it aims to democratize education, strengthen cultural roots, and improve pedagogical outcomes. The paper also draws on various theoretical frameworks, empirical studies, and policy documents to explore how a multilingual approach can foster inclusive and equitable learning in India. Recommendations are offered for successful implementation of language-related provisions under NEP 2020.
