J.K. Rowling and the redefinition of fantasy tropes: Investigating the changes in character archetypes and plot structures
Author(s): Ayushi Gaurav Doval
Abstract: J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series revolutionized modern fantasy by altering established tropes, character types, and plot structures. This paper investigates how Rowling integrates contemporary themes with traditional fantasy, specifically examining her reinterpretation of the mentor figure, the chosen one archetype, and the depiction of good versus evil. It also analyses how she transforms quest narratives, moving away from straightforward hero’s journeys to more complex, character-focused plots. Rowling’s innovative approach has significantly influenced subsequent fantasy literature, enhancing its complexity and relatability for modern readers.
