Teacher education and NEP 2020: Transforming teacher training programs
Author(s): Archana Singh
Abstract: India's National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 introduces a visionary overhaul of the educational landscape with a particular focus on revitalizing teacher education. Teachers are placed at the core of this reform, recognized not only as facilitators of learning but as nation-builders who require systematic, research-driven, and ethically grounded preparation. This paper critically analyzes the changing landscape of teacher education under NEP 2020, highlighting the transition from fragmented, input-based training systems to comprehensive, outcome-oriented, and continuous development models. Drawing on primary policy documents and academic analyses, the paper explores the redefinition of teacher roles, integration of multidisciplinary knowledge, digital adaptation, and policy-driven standardization. The study concludes with recommendations to ensure effective and inclusive implementation.
