Yoga as a mediating factor for stress, depression, anxiety, and adjustment in adolescents
Author(s): Kashi Nath Pandey
Abstract: Adolescence is a critical developmental phase often characterized by emotional turbulence, identity formation, and heightened sensitivity to stress. In recent years, the incidence of stress, depression, anxiety, and maladjustment among adolescents has escalated, raising concerns among educators, psychologists, and policymakers. Traditional mental health interventions often fall short due to stigma or limited access. This paper explores yoga as a mediating factor for psychological distress and adjustment problems in adolescents. Drawing from interdisciplinary research in psychology, neuroscience, and yoga studies, the paper argues that yoga comprising asanas, pranayama, and meditation functions as a low-cost, culturally appropriate, and scientifically validated intervention. Evidence suggests that yoga improves neurophysiological functions, promotes emotional regulation, enhances resilience, and fosters social adaptability. The paper concludes by recommending the systematic integration of yoga into school mental health programs and community-based interventions
