Abstract: The present study aims at exploring the themes of education, empowerment, sustainability, and leadership through the life stories of Rani Laxmi Kumari Chundawat, Maharani Gayatri Devi, and Shyamlal Jedia recorded in the form of autobiographies. These prominent figures, from varied social backgrounds, navigated caste, gender, and class stratifications to create perpetual social change. Viewing their life stories using the lens of postcolonial feminism, intersectionality, cultural hegemony, and leadership theories, this analysing examines how their contributions endures to inform contemporary debates on caste and gender equality, sustainable governance, and inclusive education.
Maharani Gayatri Devi’s backing for women’s education and political participation challenged patriarchal mindsets in post-independence India, laying the foundational stone for larger female representation in governance. Her stance that “education is not only necessary for earning a livelihood … but for dignity, understanding, and sensitivity for others” highlights her progressive and visionary approach. Rani Laxmi Kumari Chundawat, through her historical writings, claimed back women’s agency in Rajput history, ensuring the preserval of subaltern voices. Meanwhile, Shyamlal Jedia’s ascending from an oppressed caste background to academic leadership exhibits how education deranges systemic oppression, reinforcing the need for corroborative action.
The application of Antonio Gramsci’s theory of cultural hegemony to scrutinise how these figures subverted dominant narratives, while at the same time examining the presence of Michel de Certeau’s “tactics” theory on their strategic and collective resistance are highlight of the paper. Furthermore, Homi Bhabha’s hybridity helps in positioning their leadership in transitional political landscapes. Their stories provide a pathway for modern policymakers, advocating inclusive education, sustainable leadership, and institutional equity. By linking their efforts to broader global movements for social jusice and equality, this study focuses on how their legacies remain significant in contemporary ideas of policymaking and sustainable development narratives.
