From text to image: Shaping the future of journalism with interactive and visual tools
Author(s): Gurinder Kaur
Abstract: The paper explores the evolving intersection of design, data, and interactivity in contemporary journalism. It examines key developments in multimedia storytelling, including the use of still photography combined with natural sound, as seen in
Flash Journalism, and the rise of animated infographics that allow for user control and deeper engagement. The paper discusses how these advancements in online journalism such as interactive photo slideshows, maps, and videos are reshaping storytelling by offering a more immersive, personalized experience for audiences. The paper also highlights the shift in newsroom structures towards dedicated teams for data visualization, emphasizing the need for specialized skills in infographic-driven journalism. Moreover, it considers the ethical challenges of integrating subjective design elements, such as in the use of comics for serious topics, and the importance of maintaining journalistic standards of accuracy and transparency. The paper also explores the manifesto from the "Design + Journalism" special issue, which advocates for recognizing design as an integral part of journalism, fostering a cultural shift in digital journalism studies, and expanding the interface between academia and industry. Ultimately, it suggests that the integration of design and data in journalism requires a re-evaluation of traditional storytelling models and calls for further research into the impact of these changes on the future of journalism.
