Abstract: The study explores the effectiveness of digital tools in enhancing English-speaking skills among young learners studying in government non-English medium schools in India. Despite the growing importance of English as a global language, students in these schools face several barriers such as limited exposure to spoken English, lack of trained teachers, overcrowded classrooms, and fear of speaking. The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 encourages the integration of technology in education, offering new opportunities to bridge these gaps. Digital platforms such as DIKSHA, Hello English, BBC Learning English, and YouTube provide accessible, engaging and interactive resources that support pronunciation, vocabulary development and fluency. These tools help transform traditional classrooms into dynamic learning spaces, promoting learner participation, confidence, and self-paced practice even in resource-constrained environments.
The study employs various digital tools and instruments to encourage speaking practice, including voice recording, pronunciation exercises and game-based learning apps. Students’ progress was assessed using a five-point rubric focusing on pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, fluency and confidence. A simple questionnaire was also used to understand learners’ motivation and attitudes toward digital learning. Findings indicate that digital tools significantly enhance students’ engagement, pronunciation accuracy, and speaking confidence. Moreover, they empower both teachers and learners by making English learning more enjoyable, independentand effective. Overall, the study concludes that integrating digital tools in government non-English medium schools is a practical and promising approach to improving young learners’ English-speaking skills and fostering equitable language education.
