The role of home environment in shaping students' moral values and academic achievement with respect to demographic variables

Author(s): Maxwell Benjamin Balraj

Abstract: The study explores the role of the home environment in shaping moral values and academic achievement among higher secondary students in Chennai city, with a specific focus on various demographic variables. Using a normative survey method, data were collected from a sample of 1,446 students (810 males and 636 females) selected through stratified random sampling from 20 schools. The tools used include a self-developed Test for Moral Values among School Students (TMVSS) and the standardized Home Environment Inventory (HEI), while students’ first terminal exam scores were used to assess academic achievement. Descriptive and inferential statistics, primarily the t-test, were applied to analyze differences across home environment levels (high, moderate, low) in relation to gender, parental education, occupation, income, type of school management, type of school, and major subject groups. Results reveal significant differences in moral values and academic achievement based on demographic variables, particularly gender, parental income and education, type of school, and subject stream. Female students, students from private and aided schools, and those from families with moderate income or higher parental education generally performed better in both moral values and academic achievement. However, moral values appeared relatively stable across most home environments. The findings highlight the influence of a supportive and structured home environment, combined with socio-demographic factors, on student development. The study emphasizes the importance of parental involvement, socio-economic support, and school collaboration in nurturing morally responsible and academically successful students.
