Abstract: The Northeast has rich natural resources and diverse cultures, customs, and traditions. Naga customs and values area integral part of the Northeast’s rich cultural heritage. Different ethnic groups have different customary laws, which make culture more diverse. Naga society is governed by customary law and oral practices handed over from generation to generation. Customs are a standard code of conduct to be followed by all members of society to live a healthy and peaceful life. Every society is unique because of its unique traditions and customs. Sixteen (16) tribes of the Naga society encompass rich Naga culture, and all of them have their own customs to regulate the conduct of their members.
A patriarchal and patrilineal system runs the Naga society, so women hold fewer positions in the decision-making process of Socio-Political issues. It is presumed that the customs should be equal for all genders of society. The women of the Northeast still have certain areas where women's rights are suppressed by society. The general perception of Naga women enjoying equal status with men concerning decision-making is misleading. The present paper will highlight the limitations of Naga women’s freedom in decision-making and the importance of codifying Naga Customary Laws.
