The imperial design in functioning of William Jones
Author(s): Santoshi Kumari
Abstract: This essay is an attempt to revisit the academic image of William Jones in creating and disseminating the knowledge about Ancient India. Jones had created Asiatic Society of Bengal and is credited to have translated innumerable books of the land through ASB in English and made them accessible to the west. Academia regards them highly for not only exposing Indian culture and literature to Europe but also to the Indians who had forgotten the glory of their mother land. There is no doubt that Indologists did play a great role in creating a positive image of colonial country, India but a close look in personality of Jones brings out the latent imperial interests. Readings of the jotted lines in the diary of William Jones makes it evident that he was fully aware of the geostrategic position of India and his appointment as a judge in a colonial country was not random. This article would weave out the nuances of Jones personality those have been seldom a matter of academic inquiry.
