The evolution of historical methodology
Author(s): Prabhat Kumar
Abstract: History writing has evolved over a long period of thousands of years since the time of the Greeks when Herodotus laid the foundation for scientific history writing based on evidence. Before him it was mythology and theocratic history. The other milestones in its long journey were the contributions made by Vico, Francis Bacon and Ranke. Positivism of nineteenth century was questioned by the primacy assigned to interpretation by Collingwood while E H Carr stressed the need for striking a balance between the two.
