Modernization of rice production in Goalpara District a case study of Rangjuli Block

Author(s): Kandarpa Nath

Abstract: Agricultural mechanization, defined as the replacement of human and animal labor with modern machinery and tools, plays a pivotal role in enhancing productivity, reducing drudgery, and ensuring food security. This study investigates the status, prospects, and challenges of mechanization in rice cultivation in the Rangjuli Tribal Development Block, Goalpara district, Assam. The primary objectives were to outline the general mechanization scenario and evaluate the current state of agricultural inputs in the area. A descriptive, analytical, and evaluative research design was employed, using both primary and secondary data. Primary data were collected through a multistage purposive random sampling of 125 farmers (107 small and 18 medium) across 19 villages, using pre-tested schedules during field surveys conducted in 2022-2023. Secondary data were sourced from relevant governmental agencies. Results revealed that the average holding size was 1.23 ha, higher than the state average. Rice yields (4170.69 kg/ha) exceeded both state (2176 kg/ha) and national (2713 kg/ha) averages, with medium farmers achieving the highest yields due to better access to improved seeds, fertilizers, and irrigation. Modern tools such as tractors, power tillers, and sprayers were widely used (97% of farmers), although irrigation equipment and harvesters had limited adoption due to small plot sizes and seasonal patterns. The total production value of rice was estimated at ₹13.70 million, with a net profit of ₹8.21 million, indicating a positive relationship between mechanization and productivity. Key constraints included small landholdings, limited awareness of soil testing, dependence on high-interest loans, and partial adoption of mechanization. The study recommends targeted training, improved access to finance, infrastructure development, and tailored mechanization strategies to enhance productivity and rural livelihoods.
