A critical study of the portrayal of satire in Khushwant Singh's selected novels

Author(s): Suman Rani and Pawan Kumar Sharma

Abstract: It is said that forgiveness is divine and error is human. This adage is widely acknowledged. There are, however, certain exceptions. What would happen if someone continued making mistakes throughout? Is it possible to forgive him forever? At least he should be made aware of his foolishness, even if he is not punished harshly. Making fun of and laughing at him is one of the best methods to help him realize how weak he is. We call this strategy satire. Although the paper centers on satire, which is a well-known characteristic of Khushwant Singh’s fictional works, it will also go into great detail about the social issues and problems, superstitious beliefs, the initiation of young minds into sex, jealousy, and discrimination—all of which are the primary things that Khushwant Singh criticizes in his writing. His writing style clearly reflects this. In order to portray characters in a striking and distinctive manner, Kushwant Singh has embraced the concepts of archetypes, mythologies, and stream of consciousness. The distinctiveness and style of Kushwant Singh's work are revealed by this analysis of him as a novelist and writer, and he effectively demonstrates the method of examination in all of his major novels. While all Indo-Anglican authors have explored a range of topics in their works, Kushwant Singh has focused on love and sex, depicting the hero's sexual interactions with women in both India and the United States in great detail. He describes the incidents and events in an evasive and straightforward manner.
