Students belonging to Urdu medium schools from Asansol city: A study of equitable education and their circumstances of birth and background

Abstract: Popularly known as the city of brotherhood Asansol is the second most populated city in the state of west Bengal and 33rd largest agglomeration across India. Almost fifty thousand students are enrolled in Urdu medium schools right from primary till higher secondary level in Asansol region. An analysis of the data of the schools with huge enrollments in the city of Asansol revealed a less equitable education to learners in Urdu medium schools. The socio educational and economic status of Urdu medium students revealed further pathetic condition of their families. NEP 2020 devotes a full chapter on equitable and inclusive education. Highlighting the importance it says Inclusive and equitable education, indeed an essential goal in its own right - is also critical to achieving an inclusive and equitable society in which every citizen has the opportunity to dream, thrive, and contribute to the nation. This Policy reaffirms that bridging the social category gaps in access, participation, and learning outcomes in school education will continue to be one of the major goals of all education sector development programmes (NEP 2020 p-24). The education system must aim to benefit India’s children so that no child loses any opportunity to learn and excel because of circumstances of birth or background. The present paper is an effort to look into the equitable education available to Urdu medium learners. The paper deals with the socio educational and economic background of the Urdu medium learners in Asansol City. Relative disadvantage of Urdu medium learners has been studied with the help of UDISE data. Small samples of 40 students randomly selected from 4 Urdu medium schools have been studied in depth. Paper also suggests some solutions to make learners feel truly inclusive and enhance their academic performances. This includes allocation of resources needs a revisit. Investment in education sector needs to be enhanced at the earliest which is an old promise since many commissions and committees. The recommendation of NEP 2020 in relation to school Complexes in order to maximize the resources of different schools in the nearby surrounding needs to be implemented in true sense and spirit.
