Author(s): Sudha Prasad
Abstract: Background: Low vision is a prevalent condition affecting millions worldwide, significantly impairing individuals ability to perform daily activities and reducing their quality of life. Traditional optical aids have limitations in addressing the diverse needs of those with low vision, necessitating the development of innovative assistive technologies.
Purpose: This study aims to explore the effectiveness of various innovative assistive technologies in enhancing the daily living of individuals with low vision. It focuses on the impact of digital magnification devices, wearable smart glasses, mobile applications, and artificial intelligence (AI)-driven tools on improving mobility, access to information, and social inclusion.
Method: A comprehensive literature review was conducted using different search engines like, PubMed, Medline, Google scholar, examining recent advancements in assistive technologies for low vision. The study analysed peer-reviewed articles, clinical trials to assess the effectiveness, usability, and accessibility of these technologies.
Conclusion: The findings suggest that innovative assistive technologies, particularly those integrating AI and mobile platforms, significantly enhance the independence and quality of life of individuals with low vision. However, the study also highlights the need for further research on user-cantered design, cost-effectiveness, and accessibility to ensure these solutions are widely available and practical for diverse populations.
