Library professionals as catalysts in the open science movement
Author(s): Syed Mahmood Ahmad
Abstract: The Open Science movement, which seeks to make scientific knowledge universally accessible, is increasingly gaining traction in India. Library professionals, traditionally stewards of information, are key enablers of this transformation, particularly in the domains of Open Access (OA), Research Data Management (RDM), policy advocacy, and capacity-building. This paper explores the critical roles library professionals play in advancing the Open Science agenda in India, drawing from government policies, institutional initiatives, and scholarly reports. By examining key case studies and national efforts such as Shodhganga, the National Digital Library of India (NDLI), and the National Data Sharing and Accessibility Policy (NDSAP), this paper highlights the indispensable contributions of library professionals in shaping the future of open science in India.
