Cultural practices, identity, and status of tribal women in Dakshin Dinajpur: A socio-anthropological study
Author(s): Subhajit Kundu
Abstract: Tribal women in India embody a complex interplay of cultural heritage, gender roles, and social identity. The tribal communities of Dakshin Dinajpur district in West Bengal, including the Santhal, Oraon, Munda, and Rabha, possess rich cultural traditions that significantly shape the lives and status of women. However, these practices also intersect with broader socio-economic challenges, resulting in nuanced experiences of empowerment and marginalization. This paper examines the cultural practices, identity formation, and social status of tribal women in Dakshin Dinajpur, analyzing how traditions influence gender roles, rights, and participation in social and economic spheres. The study, based on empirical fieldwork, qualitative interviews, and community observation, aims to provide an in-depth understanding of tribal women's lived realities and the socio-cultural dynamics shaping their lives. Recommendations are offered to balance cultural preservation with gender justice.
