The impact of E-books on traditional library usage
Author(s): Shailaja Bhalchandra Vaidya
Abstract: The advent of E-books has significantly influenced the usage patterns of traditional academic libraries, leading to both positive transformations and new challenges. E-books provide students and faculty with greater convenience, offering instant access to a vast range of scholarly resources from anywhere and at any time. This shift has reduced the dependency on physical books and on-site library visits, streamlining research processes and enhancing overall accessibility. Libraries have embraced e-books for their cost-effectiveness, as they eliminate expenses associated with printing, binding, and physical storage. However, the rise of digital formats has also posed challenges, including issues related to licensing, digital rights management (DRM), and the need for continuous technological updates. Furthermore, despite their benefits, e-books cannot fully replace the tactile experience and serendipitous discovery that physical books offer. Overall, while e-books are reshaping academic library usage, they require careful integration to complement traditional library resources effectively.
