Symbolism in the scarlet letter: The letter ‘A’ and beyond
Author(s): Kiran Dalal
Abstract: This paper explores the rich symbolism embedded in Nathaniel Hawthorne’s
The Scarlet Letter, focusing primarily on the letter ‘A’ and its transformation throughout the novel. Initially a symbol of shame, the letter ‘A’ evolves to represent strength, resilience, and identity as Hester Prynne embraces her punishment. The study also extends to other symbols in the text, such as the scaffold, the forest, and Pearl, which serve to further deepen the novel’s commentary on sin, guilt, and societal judgment. By analyzing these symbols, this paper aims to highlight how they reflect the complex dynamics of human emotions and societal norms, and how they contribute to the overall themes of the novel.
