Automated inventory management in libraries using IoT sensors

Author(s): Syed Mahmood Ahmad

Abstract: Traditional library inventory management systems are labor-intensive, error-prone, and lack real-time monitoring capabilities. This paper proposes an IoT-based automated inventory solution integrating RFID technology, wireless environmental sensors, mobile interfaces, and a cloud-based dashboard to modernize library operations. Implemented in a mid-sized academic library with over 30,000 resources, the system demonstrated significant improvements: inventory time per item was reduced by over 85%, error rates dropped to 0.7%, and missing item detection reached 98% accuracy. Environmental sensors enabled proactive preservation of rare collections, while mobile apps streamlined shelf-level audits. Comparative analysis with conventional systems revealed dramatic gains in efficiency, accuracy, and staff satisfaction. The study validates that IoT-driven automation offers a scalable and sustainable model for modern libraries, with the potential to reshape inventory practices through real-time tracking, intelligent alerting, and seamless integration with existing Library Management Systems.
